Engineering and Design
Balfour Beatty Rail provides railway infrastructure engineering from feasibility through outline and detailed design to construction design liaison and testing and commissioning support.
We have in-house design teams for all Permanent Way, Overhead Line, Traction Power Supply and Electrical and Mechanical design. We employ around 100 permanent specialist railway systems designers and support staff across all disciplines and we supplement these as projects require with a further 50 contract design staff.
We provide design and engineering services both to our own design and build projects and also direct to railway infrastructure clients and to other design houses requiring the specialist railway system skills and experience that we can offer. Balfour Beatty Rail can offer the full range of support through a project life cycle or for one aspect only, such as feasibility or detailed design.
A key aspect of the design expertise that we offer to clients is that of constructability through design. Our strong construction background enables us to ensure that construction requirements such as stagework planning which are so vital to the success of any railway infrastructure project, are considered from early concept design right through to detailed design.
